WACO, TEXAS — Turning Point USA made a stop at Baylor University on April 22 for their “This is the Turning Point” tour. The event drew significant attention to the university, with both positive and negative reactions to the organization’s presence.
Baylor TPUSA member Alex Martin, an attendee of the event, said “I was thoroughly impressed and happy throughout. I felt that a lot of the views I express were shared. I felt like it was an area with a lot of people who also shared the same beliefs as me.”
Other students were not as enthused by the views espoused at the event, which featured Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, political commentator Benny Johnson and Border Czar Tom Homan.
Some found statements made by Johnson to be divisive and offensive.
The Baylor Lariat quoted graduate student Tanish Singh as stating that he found Johnson’s comments “morally reprehensible.”
Singh worked with other students and organizations to hold a separate event on April 22, titled “All Are Neighbors.” The alternative event featured Human Rights Campaign President Kelley Robinson and Interfaith Alliance President Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush.
When confronted about his statements during the Q&A session of the TPUSA event, Johnson brushed off the criticism, portraying his comments as comedic for entertainment.
Baylor TPUSA chapter members remain supportive of the event and its speakers. Chapter executive members Quinn Bradshaw, Peter Fernandez and Jessica Frausto stood behind Johnson when questioned by the Lariat.
Despite the backlash, the Baylor TPUSA chapter is looking forward to next semester and seeking to continue their momentum.
