WACO, TEXAS — Baylor University’s graduate journalism program is bringing in students from across the globe, including Anni Qiang, an international student from China who says the experience is helping shape both her career and confidence.

Qiang, who studies journalism with a focus on public relations, said coming to Baylor last August pushed her to grow in ways she didn’t expect. “

The biggest accomplishment for me is that I’ve become more curious and more confident,” Qiang said. “I have the desire to explore more in the future… I’m very open to new things.”

That growth hasn’t just been personal but it’s also academic. Baylor’s program requires students to complete a final research project or thesis, giving them the chance to apply what they’ve learned through hands-on work and original research.

Qiang said those opportunities have already made a difference. She has completed two research papers and presented her work, experiences she said helped her connect with others and gain valuable feedback.

“It was a very good opportunity,” Qiang said. “You present in front of a lot of people who are excited for you, and you receive a lot of useful information. You also have opportunities to connect with professors from other universities.”

Now, she’s taking those skills a step further. Qiang plans to focus more on quantitative research as she prepares to pursue a Ph.D. at the University of Alabama.

For students like Qiang, Baylor’s graduate journalism program is more than just a degree but it’s a space to grow, explore and prepare for what comes next.
