WACO, TEXAS — St. Peter Catholic Student Center is planning to construct a new chapel to accommodate the growing number of the Catholic student population.

Father Henry Finch is the rector and chaplain of St. Peter Catholic Student Center. He says the chapel can no longer hold the increasing number of students attending Sunday Masses.

Finch explained that over the past two years the center has experienced growth in its congregation creating a need for a larger space. However, the project comes with a significantly large price tag.

“This project is about a $10 million-dollar project,” Finch said. “We have raised about half of the money in pledges.”

The center launched a capital campaign in September of 2026 to raise funds to construct a 450-seat chapel. Approximately $5 million has already been pledged leaving $5 million to remain.

Finch says the center is still working to obtain the remaining pledges needed to move forward with the project.

The center hopes to break ground within the next 18 to 24 months, although that timeline depends on the success of the current campaign. The proposed expansion plan looks to provide St. Peter Catholic Student Center with a larger worship space and other areas for students to celebrate Mass and live prosperous student life.
